Jake Kaufman plays in 8-Man All Star Game

Jake Kaufman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Kaufman and a 2010 graduate of Newman Grove High School, participated in the 33rd annual Nebraska 8-Man Football Coaches Association and Sertoma All-Star football game Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Hastings College in Hastings Nebraska. Jake was a member of the East Team. The game’s profits help benefit the Sertoma Clubs of Nebraska with their speech and hearing foundations. Each year the game raises $5,000-$6,000 for the worthwhile cause.

Jake saw most of his action Saturday at Defensive End and special teams. Jake was in on six tackles including one with a sack help. West Team defeated the East Team 43-12.

Besides parents Jim and Kathy Kaufman, brother Josh, (Jason was in Europe with this program), and other Kaufman family members and friends helped cheer Jake on.

Jake becomes the 9th Newman Grove graduate to play in the Sertoma game.

Newman Grove Participants were: 1996, Perry Mostek; 1997, Casey Nelson; 1998, Ed Schmidt; 1999, Steve Bender; 2001, Kellon Habben; 2002, Shane Nelson; 2006, Ryan Rudloff; 2009, Jordan Nelson; and 2010, Jake Kaufman.

Other All-Star Football Game for Newman Grove graduates: 1997, Matt Rudloff, Down Under Bowl in Australia; 1997, Casey Nelson, All American Bowl at Doane College in Crete, NE; and 2006, Ryan Rudloff, Nebraska-Oklahoma All-Star Game at Doane College in Crete, NE.

Another athlete with local ties played in Saturday’s 8-Man All Star Game in Hastings. Dennis Hanzel of Humphrey Public School was also on the East Team. Dennis’s grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Merlin (LaVede) Wallin of Newman Grove.

Dennis’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hanzel (mother Bridget is a Newman Grove High School graduate) and family were in attendance to support Dennis. Also Dennis’s grandmother, some aunts, uncles and cousins from the Newman Grove area and Colorado help cheer him on.
