“Sodzo”: Newman Grove alumna opens art show in Omaha

Betz Quincy

Tana Quincy has a solo art show now open to the public at the Bemis Underground located in Omaha’s Old Market. Tana’s 21 small oil paintings, named SODZO, deal with healing. “Sodzo” is a Greek word meaning “to preserve” or “to become whole.”

Tana’s paintings show close-ups of bones, muscles, joints and tendons. For this show Tana created each piece using a series of plaster casts and human bones. The works, mounted on small brown boxes and displayed on a brown wall, appear to float. Their layout also gives the appearance of an arched spine or music on a staff. During a gallery talk on Saturday morning, February 20th, Tana shared that she had hung her paintings to the notes of a song she had written. During this time she also took questions from the audience and shared interesting details about her collection.

A 1996 graduate of Newman Grove, Tana received her B.F.A. with emphasis in painting and sculptures from the University of Nebraska a Kearney. She attended the New York Academy of Art where she studied classical figurative painting and received her M.F.A.

After working for two years in New York as a painter, illustrator, and art instructor, Tana relocated to Omaha in August. She now teaches painting and drawing at the Metro College in Elkhorn and The University of Nebraska at Omaha. She is presently teaching a life drawing class at Joslyn’s Museum in Omaha and also has taught classes at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts.

Tana’s collection will show through March 27th. The Bemis Underground located at 724 South 12th Street in Omaha and is open Tuesday – Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Friends, family, and the public gathered at the Bemis Underground Friday evening February 19th for an opening reception for Tana and two other area Omaha artists. Dr. Ed Quincy and Betz of Newman Grove, parents of Tana, were in attendance.
