Bluejays come close in losses to Clarkson and Plainview

The Bluejays traveled to Clarkson to play the Red Devils on Monday, January 4th. The Red Devils outscored the Jays in the first two quarters 17-12 and 13-9 to take a 30-21 lead into half. The Jays outscored the Red Devils 10-6 and 17-12 in the third and fourth quarters to even up the game at 48 points apiece. With a 1:30 to go in the game, the Jays hit three big 3-pointers to erase a six point deficit and off-set a couple of made free-throws by Clarkson to send the game into overtime. In overtime the Jays lead by 3 with two minutes to go, but the Red Devils hit a lay-up and a big three pointer, along with three free throws to beat the Jays. It was a very exciting game and the Jays showed a lot of heart in coming back from being down the whole game and taking it into overtime.

On Saturday, January 9th, the Plainview Pirates visited Newman Grove. The Bluejays got off to their best start of the year with 23 points in the first quarter to the Pirates 8. The Pirates outscored the Jays 19-14 to cut the Jays 15 point lead to 10 at half. In the third quarter, the Pirates scored 19 again to the Jays 11; cutting the Jays 10 point lead to 2 points. In the fourth quarter the Pirates took the lead but the Jays battled back and regained the lead with around three minutes to go in the game. The Pirates were able to hit a couple big shots and take advantage of three turnovers by the Jays down the stretch to win the game 63-58. Both teams shot the ball 40% from the field. The Pirates shot 12 of 18 from the free throw line to the Jays 8 of 21. The Jays had 23 turnovers to the Pirates 12. Helping to offset the turnovers were the Jays 14 offensive boards to the Pirates 5. This game too, was exciting with it only being a two point game with under a minute to go. The Jays will host Elgin/Elgin PJ on Tuesday, January 11th and travel to Howells on Saturday, January 16th.
