The Holy Family boys’ basketball team started their holiday tournament play with a game against Dodge on December 28. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early first quarter lead. A strong defense led by senior Mitchell Wiese allowed only five first quarter points and only thirteen at the half. The Bulldogs kept up the intensity in the second half and won the game 50-48. The scoring for Holy Family was led by Kelan Schumacher and Andrew Kurtenbach who each put up 14 while John McPhillips added 7. The scorers for the Pirates were Danny Hassler with 15 and Tommy Ruzek with 9. This win sent the young group of Bulldogs to the Championship game vs. the Beavers of St. Edward.

Holy Family started off the Championship match vs. the Beavers very slowly. The Bulldogs found themselves trailing early in the first half. It was the second quarter before the Bulldogs found a rhythm and got some offense going. After finally getting a spark, the Bulldogs trailed 19-17 at the half. A high scoring third quarter and another great defensive game led by Wiese allowed Holy Family to take a 39-24 lead into the fourth. The dominant second half continued into the fourth and the Bulldogs won 57-34. Scoring for the Bulldogs was led by junior John McPhillips with 13 and senior Kelan Schumacher with 12. Andrew Kurtenbach chipped in 11 and Mitchell Wiese added 8. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 5-2 and will take on the Terriers of Rising City on Thursday, January 7.
