Carl Eucker’s war experience published
Vivian Eucker, English teacher at Newman Grove Public Schools, recently had an essay published in the book Knee High by the Fourth of July: More Stories of Growing Up in and Around Small Towns in the Midwest. This book was published by Shapato Publishing out of Everly, Iowa. Jean Tennant was the editor of the book.
Vivian’s essay was about Carl Eucker, who served in the army air force during World War II. Carl had the unique experience of never going through boot camp before he was shipped over to Australia and on to New Guinea with the 403rd Heavy-Bomb Group. The article entitled “Untrained Valor” describes Carl’s experience in the war and his heroism in saving a young pilot’s life.
Each year fewer Veterans from World War II are able to share their stories. Carl’s story is special because it is rare that a young man would be sent to war without basic training. “Carl and Elaine Eucker have created a strong legacy for their future generations. It’s been a privilege to share their story,” said Vivian Eucker.
If you would like to read Carl’s story and the other essays, a copy of Knee High by the Fourth of July has been donated to the Newman Grove Public Library.
