Newman Grove loses playoff game

Coach Bill Mimick

The Newman Grove Bluejay football team traveled to Milligan on Thursday, October 29, 2009, to face number 3 seeded Exeter-Milligan Timberwolves in Class D-1, 8 man Nebraska State playoff football game. The game was pretty well played in cold, windy, rainy conditions.

A veteran Exeter-Milligan team (13 seniors) scored twice in the first 4 ½ minutes of the game, to lead 16-0. After that it was an even game, going back and forth, up and down the field, once the Bluejays adjusted to the speed of the Timberwolves.

The Bluejays pulled to 8- 16 the second quarter, but couldn’t overcome the slow start.

Bluejays getting in good playing time and helping the effort included Derek Stone, Jake Kaufman, Matt King, Ben Jacobson, Sheldon Boschen, Tanner Bollig, Jesse Kaufman, Shane Farrier, Tatem Fowlkes, Spencer Wallin, Troy McCuiston, and Derek Wallin. Others contributing on special teams, or subbing in, were Mark O’Brien, Tony Wallin, Alex Johnson and Michael Woischnor.

Impressive after the game were the Newman Grove players and coaches congratulating the officials on a good game, after wishing Exeter-Milligan well. Good Sportsmanship!

Equally impressive were the Newman Grove parents and fans coming out to field in the terrible weather conditions, to congratulate the team on a good season. You are true supporters, and very loyal. Thanks!

This was the last game for three seniors in the Blue and White: Matt King, Jake Kaufman and Derek Stone. We wish them the best.

Thank you to Alan and Daidrea Donelson for sending pop and cookies to the team for the way home. Also thanks to the kitchen staff for making sack lunch for the trip to Milligan.
