Jays win homecoming battle

Coach Mimick

The Newman Grove Bluejay Football team raised their season record to 4 wins, 2 losses, with a 42-6 Homecoming victory over Elkhorn Valley on Friday, October 9, 2009, at Fireman’s Football Field Park in Newman Grove. The Falcons kept trying throughout the game, scoring a touchdown in 4th quarter, while their record is now 1 win, 5 losses.

The Jays set the tone early in the game, after Jake Kaufman kicked the opening kick off into the end zone. The defense stopped the Falcon offense on the first five possessions, with a 3 and out series forcing punts. The Bluejay offense capitalized, scoring on its first five possessions. Special teams got into the scoring act with a 51 yard punt return by Sheldon Boschen. Sophomore Spencer Wallin put a bone-crushing block on the first Elkhorn Valley player up field, enabling Sheldon to get behind the wall of four other blockers.

After the middle of the second quarter, the Newman Grove team substituted freely, giving all Bluejays suited up good playing time. Fourteen Jays recorded defensive stats, while there were 11 different players recording scoring, rushing, passing, and pass receiving stats. The offensive and defensive controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the game. The offense and return game produced 450 total yards.

The Jays take to the road for the last two games. First up is an improved North Central team. North Central is a big team, with ends that stand 6’5” and 6’6”, with several players over the 200 pound mark. The game will be played in Springview. If you thought Butte was far for a game, wait until you go to Springview (158 miles). North Central is a coop team of Rock County High School (Bassett) and Keya Paha County High School (Springview). Springview is located close to the South Dakota border, about halfway between Butte and Valentine.

North Central made the trip to Newman Grove in 2008. The Nebraska School Activities Association has set up the football schedules in recent years, creating some unusual games. Usually you don’t travel that far, unless it is the state playoffs.

But this is an opportunity to see a different team, and a different part of the state. There are friendly people all over the state, and the people in that area are as friendly as any. The area is ranching country. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 16.
