The Newman Grove Post Office has joined a nationwide effort to fight breast cancer through sales of the Breast Cancer Research semipostal or fund raising stamp.
The Newman Grove Post Office will be observing October as Breast Cancer Awareness month, along with the rest of the nation.
The 55-cent, self-adhesive Breast Cancer Research semipostal stamp is valid for postage at the First-Class Mail first-ounce letter rate in effect at the time of purchase, with the differential (currently 11 cents, (less the Postal Service’s reasonable costs) going to the National Institutes of Health and the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense. The differential consists of a tax-deductible contribution.
Nationwide, more than 850 million Breast Cancer Research semipostals have been sold, raising more than $68 million for research, since it’s introduction in 1998.
“Our customers have turned the simple act of purchasing postage stamps into a meaningful and effective way to participate in the fight against breast cancer,” said Postmaster Mike Kroeger. “The Postal Service has a proud tradition of issuing stamps to help raise awareness of social issues. The Breast Cancer Research semipostal stamp takes this wonderful tradition a step further by providing funds for a worthy cause. We encourage everyone to purchase and use the Breast Cancer Research semipostal stamp on their cards and letters.”
The semipostal stamp was designed by Ethel Kessler, a breast cancer survivor in Bethesda, Maryland, and was illustrated by Whitney Sherman of Baltimore, Maryland.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.
The Breast Cancer Research semipostal stamps, and other stamps, are available for purchase at Post Offices across the country, by phone at 1-800-ST AMP-24, and online at the Postal Store at usps.com/shop.
When a customer buys a sheet of Breast Cancer stamps, they will be given a pink “Give them Hope” card. On each card, someone’s name (First names only) will be written, and the cards will be displayed in the Post Office lobby. This is a great way to honor someone who is fighting breast cancer, or someone who has won the battle with breast cancer. Patricia Carpenter, a breast cancer survivor challenges each person to buy a sheet of breast cancer stamps to Fund the Fight & Find a Cure, early detection is the key, let’s have the Post Office walls covered in PINK!
The full size painting of the semipostal stamp of the “goddess of the hunt” was completed by Annett Bender, and will be on display at the Newman Grove Post Office for everyone see and enjoy.
For more information, brochures are available at the Newman Grove Clinic.
Thanks to all, Mike.
