The Newman Grove Bluejay football team opened the 2009 campaign with a 46-0 win over The Omaha National Chiefs (Macy). The Jays scored the first 6 times they had possession of the football.
The game was played on Friday, September 5, 2009, in Newman Grove.
The Chiefs, who qualified for the state tournament in Basketball last winter, had some athletic individuals and some size. The drove to the Bluejay 22 yard line, but lost a fumble. This was the closest they came to scoring, as 16 of the 21 Bluejays suited up and recorded defensive stats.
The offensive line of center Derek Wallin, guards Jake Kaufman, Tanner Bollig, Spencer Wallin and ends Shane Farrier, Jesse Johnson and Matt King came off the ball well. Backs Ben Jacobson, Sheldon Boschen, Troy McCuiston, Derek Stone and Tatem Fowlkes blocked for each other well, and ran well.
The Bluejay defense and punt return team helped set up good field positions in the game.
Newman Grove had 299 yards rushing to Omaha Nation’s 71 yards, 4 out of 8 completed passes to 3 out of 11, and 122 yards returned to 68 yards, with a total of 479 yards to 173 yards.
Newman Grove will host Humphrey, a big winner over Osceola last Friday, on Friday, September 11, 2009. Game time is 7:00 p.m. The Humphrey Bulldog football team is working its’ way back to being an eight power house like they were in the 1970’s and 1980’s, when they won a state championship and were runner ups once.
