Newman Grove attends Swing Choir camp in Kansas

Tami Texley, Tenee’ Kopejtka and Joan O’Brien attended the Butler Show choir Showcase Camp at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas, the week of July 12- 18, 2009. 300 students and 28 teachers from many states came together to learn over seventeen song and dance numbers during the week. The students and teachers performed a concert on Friday evening at the Butler Community College Gym.

The three worked with well known choreographers Marty DeMott, Katie DiCicco, Valerie Lippoldt Mack, Stephen Todd, David Moellenkamp, Rachel Simmons and Lara Moffett Menard. Greg Gilpin, Greg Jasperse, and Chris Droegmueller were the composers that worked with us on singing. Paul Gulsvig and Cheri Helmer-Riensche were our inspirational speakers.

Three Men and a Melody, an international award winning Barbershop quartet, performed for us on Wednesday afternoon. They sang wonderful harmonies and told many fun jokes. The teachers and students gave talent shows. The highlight of the week was the performance from the Butler Community College Headliners Swing Choir.

All three of us agreed this was a great week and the best camp we had ever been to. The students learned we have to work as a team to have a great finished performance. Just like in sports, we have a common goal to excel and each player must do his/her best to reach that goal.

The Newman Grove Music Boosters and the Albion Music Club provided scholarships for Tenee’ and Joan.
