Newman Grove summer 2009

Ladies of the Garden Club June

Patricia Carpenter

We experienced a great spring and early summer with rains that were plentiful. The watering came from the heavens instead of our hose, buckets and sprinklers. Last year it was so dry we could not pull weeds; this year they come out willingly.

We have a new tool storage building on the west side of the pool house which was constructed and donated by Larry Carpenter. We love this building; it frees up our vehicles of gardening tools and tidies up the pool area. We don’t know what we did without it – so convenient for us now.

The grass continues to grow with heat and moisture, and Doug Pospisil kindly donates his time and talents to keep it mowed and trimmed. We are so glad the heat gets too intense in Arizona so he can spend his summers in God’s country, Nebraska.

Most of the flowers and flowering bushes are in full bloom, with the exception of the hydrangeas, and things look very cozy and cheerful at the pool. The brightly colored outer benches and chairs the Ag Team painted, with the leadership of Tom Krause, are an added bonus to the area.

Rocks were donated by Wes Barthel, which is a luxury, since it is difficult to get rocks in this area. Many have donated their flower bulbs that were getting to be too many in their home flower gardens. The kindness and generous love and approval of others keep us going on these hot, humid Nebraska June days.

We are not where we want to be yet, but we have come a long distance in the past three years for having three people total in our club. The entry to the RV parking needs a facelift, and we always welcome visitors to our area and want it attractive for them.

For those of you who have moved from Newman Grove but consider it your roots, maybe you can help us like Dolly Parton has helped her home town area.

To quote her, “When you make it, you help your family and your hometown.” Our current economically depressed area needs some kindheartedness, things to take pleasure in, and gladness.

If you can help, send to “The Ladies of the Garden Club”, PO Box 387, Newman Grove, NE 68758. We thank you for your thoughtfulness in remembering your own home town.
