Newman Grove Reporter changes hands
Kathy Worre
Effective with this edition, the Newman Grove Reporter, continuously published since 1882, has changed ownership. Kathy Worre has owned the Reporter since May of 1999. It now is being purchased by Teresa and Sam Mueller of Newman Grove.
Over the past ten years Worre has changed the appearance of the paper, nearly doubled its readership and developed an online internet edition. With the policy of keeping the articles “local, local, local” she has increased the interest of the communities of Newman Grove and Lindsay to beyond their borders.
“It has been my approach to be a newspaper that would ‘recreate’ the small, rural community feeling for many who no longer live here,” Worre commented. It has proven to improve the perception of our out-of-town people, and draw them back to their hometowns. Having a presence at local gatherings and filling the paper with pictures has continued to be the theme of the paper’s coverage.
It was in 2007 that a diagnosis and health concerns caused her to be unable to physically complete the demands of a weekly newspaper. Since numerous hospitalizations in 2008, and the need to be within close proximity of a trauma level hospital, Worre has had to stay in the Minneapolis, Minnesota, area.
“It has been a hard decision to make, but continuing problems gave me no choice,” Worre said, and the day to day operations of the newspaper have had to be covered by Teresa Mueller, her employee. “She proved she could handle everything and keep it going under difficult circumstances.” Mueller and Worre have been making plans for the changeover since last year.
“I was determined to find a buyer who would keep the coverage reflecting the values of the community and dedicate themselves to the need of promoting Newman Grove and Lindsay to those no longer here.”
Teresa Mueller proved herself during a very difficult time, and desires to do all that is necessary to make the Newman Grove Reporter a continued success. She and her husband Sam have ingratiated themselves to this area by serving and giving of themselves in many situations.
“We have a unique community. The descendants of the original founders still are the primary residents. The values and community life have always been loving and giving. We have an exceptionally pleasant way of life, and the local newspaper needs to reflect that. I believe Teresa is more than capable to do what is needed to keep the Reporter viable in the future.”
Kathy Worre will continue to come to Newman Grove when her health allows it. “Newman Grove is my birthplace and much of my family is here. I want to continue to write and contribute to the paper as I am able. Also I will be available to Teresa for any questions or concerns she may have.
“I remember how wonderful people were to me when I purchased that paper in 1999. I anticipate you will show the same kindnesses to Teresa and Sam. Please take the opportunity to congratulate them.”
The transition will be handled as quickly as possible. Legal issues are in process and will be completed soon. It brings another chapter to this staple of life within our communities.
