Local church celebrates anniversary
Shell Creek Lutheran Church’s 135th anniversary celebration culminated Sunday, May 24th, with a special worship service at the church and dinner following at the Newman Grove Community Center.
Shell Creek Church was organized on February 2, 1874. Since that anniversary date in February, several activities have led up to this celebration held Sunday. Prior events included “Hat Sunday,” “Family Fun Fest,” “Men & Women sitting on separate sides of the church Sunday,” a Sunday honoring the loyal work of the women of Shell Creek, and a Sunday honoring the men and their roles in the church. Skits were written by Pastor Becky Beckmann.
This Sunday’s service included special music by Rolly Goodman, Kara Goodman, Kathy Sup, Janice Sokol, and Diann Fowlkes. The choir consisting of present and past members of Shell Creek was accompanied by Sally Goodman. The church history was read by Marian Anderson. Recognition of members was read by Connie Rankin. Diann Fowlkes read letters that were received, offering congratulatory greetings. Others speaking were former Pastor LeRoy Dobbe, former PMA Jacquie Samway, Grace Gundale Nyhus (daughter of former Pastor Elnar Gundale), and Verna Belle Nelson.
Mr. and Mrs. DeLayne Nelson presided at the guest book at the noon meal. Mr. & Mrs. Gale Anderson were host couple. Marlys Krueger and Kim Forre served the anniversary cake. The meal was catered by Julie’s Catering of Albion. Serving on the Anniversary Committee were Pastor Becky Beckmann, Marian Anderson, Martha Ann Anderson, Phyllis Forre, Diann Fowlkes, Clara Munger, Verna Belle Nelson, and Connie Rankin.*
*Update - the original story accidentally left out Connie's last name. Sorry.
