Holy Family Quiz Bowl takes 2nd at Conference

Lacey McPhillips

It was a cold windy night when all of the smartest whiz kids of the Cornhusker Conference congregated at the Humphrey High school. What, you may ask, brought all these geniuses together in one building on one night? Why, it was the annual Conference Quiz Bowl tournament, of course. This intense battle of the brains is meant to test the stamina of your mind under pressure, as well as your button-pushing skills. The officiator asks rapid-fire questions about anything from current events to details about the movie “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” and whichever team gets to their buttons first gets to answer the question.

It was a very intense night for the Lindsay Holy Family Quiz Bowl team. Last year’s champions were under a lot of pressure to defend their title. Under the superb coaching skills of Mrs. Becky Lindgren, the fairly young team of Kelan Schumacher, Zach Hemmer, and Brady Fehringer, led by senior veterans Dylan Schumacher and Lacey McPhillips managed to thrive under that pressure and make it to the championship round for the second straight year. There, they battled the Leigh Panthers, who they had already beaten in the semifinals. Because of the new double-elimination format, the Panthers would have had to beat Holy Family twice in order to take home the gold. It seemed that the defending champions had their repeat in the bag.

Unfortunately, luck was not in Holy Family’s favor. Leigh beat them in the first match of the championship, and by the second round, Lindsay’s fingers and brains were tired. It was a close battle, but in the end, the right questions were not asked for the Holy Family Bulldogs, and the defending champions had to settle with a silver medal.
