Lindsay Holy Family ties for 5th at State

Lacey McPhillips

The Holy Family Speech team traveled to Kearney on Friday, March 20, to participate in the state meet.

Participants for Holy Family include Kim and Kelan Schumacher in Duet Acting; Stacey Lindhorst, Nikki Schnitzler, Andrew Kurtenbach, Kelan Schumacher, and Melissa Schumacher in Oral Interpretation of Drama; Zach Hemmer in Humorous Prose; Victoria Wiese in Humorous and Serious Prose; Kyle Wegener in Informative and Entertainment speaking; and Lacey McPhillips in Poetry.

For some, it was a disappointing day. Kyle Wegener didn’t make finals in either of his events. Neither did Victoria Wiese’s Humorous Prose nor did the OID team quite make the cut.

But for others, it was quite a successful meet. Returning State Champions, the Schumacher duet made finals easily. Sophomores Victoria Wiese and Zach Hemmer topped their first state appearance with a trip to the finals; Wiese in Serious Prose and Hemmer in Humorous Prose. Senior Lacey McPhillips received a pleasant surprise when she managed to sneak into the finals in Poetry.

McPhillips went on to receive seventh place, while Wiese took home sixth. Hemmer was quite pleased with his third place finish – not too bad for his first appearance at state.

The most anticipated moment of the day came when they were announcing the Duet finalists. Could the Schumacher duet pull off a repeat championship? The answer, after a few excruciating minutes of tense anticipation, was YES!

Holy Family tied with Hampton for fifth place with 46 points – great success for the little school who could.
