The Holy Family Speech team had a successful day on Wednesday. They left at 7:30 in the morning to travel to Cedar Rapids of their District meet, and came home in the afternoon with a Runner-up plaque and an assortment of medals in their hands.

Out of the twelve competitors who went to the meet, ten of them will be making the trip to State next Friday, a few of them in more than one event. Holy Family had two champions: Kyle Wegener in Informative and Kim & Kelan Schumacher (Schumacher2) in Duet Acting.

Kyle Wegener also made it to State in Entertainment with 2nd place. Kelan Schumacher will be part of the Oral Interpretation of Drama (OID) team, along with Stacey Lindhorst, Nikki Schnitzler, Melissa Schumacher and Andrew Kurtenbach, who qualified by receiving 3rd place.

In Humorous Prose, Victoria Wiese and Zach Hemmer received 2nd and 3rd, respectively, qualifying both for State. Wiese also qualified in Serious Prose by receiving 3rd place. In Poetry, Lacey McPhillips received 3rd place, qualifying her for State.

Other competitors who didn’t make it to State include Trevor Lindhorst in Extemporaneous Speaking and Melissa Schumacher in Informative, who made it to finals but received 6th place – not enough to qualify. Natalie Kurtenbach competed in Poetry, Kim Schumacher in Entertainment, and Lacey McPhillips in Serious Prose, but didn’t make it to finals.

Holy Family won 2nd place as a team with 92 points, finishing just ahead of Orchard, who had 89 points. The champions were Leigh, with 111 points.

The Class D2 State competition will take place on Friday, March 20th at the University of Nebraska Kearney. Events will start at 8:00 am.
